Rollover crash in Washington kills 1, injures 4

The Washington State Patrol responded to a crash that took place on Interstate 205 and killed one person on Aug. 16. Six Vancouver residents were in the vehicle that rolled over around 3:05 a.m., and police think that alcohol may have played a role in the accident.

A 21-year-old man traveling north on the highway took the exit to Southeast Mill Plain Boulevard at freeway speed, and the vehicle exited the roadway on the right. The driver tried to get the vehicle back on the roadway but lost control, and the vehicle ended up on its roof. An 18-year-old passenger died at the scene, and four other people in the vehicle suffered injuries.

Only the two people in the front were wearing seat belts, and the man who died and another passenger in the backseat were ejected from the vehicle. Three people went to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center with minor injuries, and the passenger in the front seat fled the scene for unknown reasons. He is not facing any charges and gave a statement after being contacted by detectives. The driver was in custody later that evening on suspicion of vehicular homicide.

Negligent actions like drunk driving or speeding might cause otherwise preventable accidents, and drivers who do not act responsibly on the road can be held accountable when their actions play a significant part in injuring another person. Injured parties may be able to file a personal injury claim against any liable for an accident to help with the cost of medical expenses or property damages. Some could speculate that choosing not to wear a seat belt can increase the severity of injuries, so anyone in such a situation may have any court award reduced by his or her own percentage of fault.
